Hoosiers Win 11-4 in 5-inning Game

Due to a rainy day in Bloomington, the IU/Chicago State game was called after 5 innings. Luckily for the Hoosiers (9-15), they got the bats going early with 4 runs in the 1st and 5 runs in the 2nd and never relinquished the lead. Matt Bashore, the Hoosier starter, worked in limited innings so as to remain fresh for the upcoming conference weekend series at Illinois. Fortunately for him, however, his 3 innings gave him just enough to get the win in the 5-inning game. This win is hopefully the first of a long string for Bashore as he improved his record to 1-3.

The Hoosier bats were hot as they combined for 11 hits at the plate. Even more impressive, however, is that 12 different Hoosiers reached first base in only 4 innings (we did not bat in the bottom of the 5th). Kipp Schutz (1-1, BB, 2 runs) and Tyler Rogers (2-3, 2 RBI) each homered for IU. Jake Dunning and Jerrud Sabourin also had 2 hits apiece. In his first Hoosier at bat, freshman Matt Serfling also came up big with his first collegiate hit.

Regardless of who the win was against, it was nice to see IU put up very solid offensive numbers, and it was great to see Bashore look like the first team All-Big Ten player that he is. Hopefully this momentum will carry over to tomorrow's game against Cincinnati and into the weekend series vs. Illinois. Check out the IDS for a couple good post-game quotes. Also, if you are interested, check out the articles on Phegley and Arnett.

Next game: 4/1 at 6:30pm EST vs. Cincinnati (13-10) at Marge Schott Stadium in Cincinnati, OH.

Projected Starters: IU - LHP Drew Leininger (0-1, 7.50) vs. UC - LHP Kevin Johnson (2-0, 6.39); Cincinnati Quick Stat: .284 Team BA

  2. Nice catch on Serfling. He's got to be excited about that first hit! I hope you don't mind, I mentioned it over on the other blog, so I guess I took credit for your keen observation! I didn't get to hear the game, but I'll assume that Matt Brady mentioned it was his first hit.

  4. It was nice to take home the victory today even if they were 2-23, but I will really be happy when we start racking up wins against top-quality Big Ten foes, and that starts this weekend with the Illini! Let's here it for the Hoosiers!

  5. Whooaa, IU Behind the Plate. Thanks for watching out for Alex D on that Big 10 Hard Ball Blog. (i.e., telling him he had a home run for the weekend team.)

I've got a dumb question here: who runs the Big 10 Blog. I guess there's nothing official about it, but it seems like it's virtually impossible for anyone to make that 2-person Big 10 Player of the Week Team. At least that guy gives some recognition to a few more players and also allows the rest of us to see some consistent names appear in the Big 10 (i.e., I've been noticing Dufec and Lamarre at Michigan, and--of course--our own Josh P).

Also, are you going to be around awhile? Or, are you more of a parent-type like most of us out here?

...ok, I suppose that was a "power babble"...., but I am excited about any win at this point!!

  7. IU Behind the Plate (what do you like to be called?),
I want to be able to vote for more than 1 of the "...IU player(s) [I] would you like to see get more at bats..." Can we have a "choose no more than 3 or 4 type option?"
    Thanks

  8. Unfortunately I made it so you could only vote for 1 and can not change it after the fact. Feel free, however, to sound off on the others below or wait for the results post to do so!

Also, with regard to Dickerson on the other blog, no problem. Gotta make sure everyone gets the credit they deserve! Same with Serfling as I'm happy you were sharing the knowledge on the other IU blog.

Behind the Plate is fine as I would prefer to remain anonymous as to not provide restrictions on my writing (not a parent though).
