After collecting back-to-back doubles in the 2nd inning to take an early 1-0 lead, the Iowa Hawkeyes could muster no more against Eric Arnett as the right-hander tossed his 3rd consecutive complete game, leading the Hoosiers to a 5-1 victory. Arnett struck out 11 and walked just 2, improving his record to 7-1 on the season.
In IU's first appearance on the Big Ten Network this season, Arnett certainly didn't disappoint, getting stronger as the game progressed. When he wasn't blowing his mid-90s fastball by the Hawkeye hitters, he was fooling them with a hard, biting, slider. 3 starts into the conference season, Arnett has clearly established himself among the leaders for Big Ten Conference Pitcher of the Year.
Josh Phegley led the way at the plate for the Hoosiers with 2 hits, including his 9th homerun of the season. Tyler Rogers also had 2 hits and drove in a run for IU (including a double), and Evan Crawford had a big base hit to left in the 4th that plated 2. The Hoosiers struggled for much of the game to figure out Iowa's freshman left-hander Jarred Hippen, but IU eventually chased him out of the game with 2 runs in the top half of the 8th.
Now that I have given my take on the game, take a look at the highlights courtesy of the Big Ten Network.
The win was the 3rd in a row for the Hoosiers and improves the team's record to 5-2 in the Big Ten and 15-17 overall. IU will be looking for a sweep tomorrow afternoon with Matt Bashore on the mound. It would be great to see him pick up his first conference win of the season and maybe even put forth a third consecutive complete game effort by a Hoosier hurler. I'll just be happy with a W either way. Tomorrow's game will be televised live again by the Big Ten Network. Game time is 2:30 ET. Go Hoosiers!
