Yahoo! Sports/Rivals.com - Big Ten teams ready to take next step

Kendall Rogers, college baseball editor for Yahoo! Sports and Rivals.com, previews the Big Ten's fall workouts and had the following to write about IU:

Indiana
Biggest loss. P Eric Arnett

What to watch. The Hoosiers took a huge step forward last season by tallying a 30-win season and reaching an NCAA regional by winning the Big Ten tournament. But coach Tracy Smith and his program don’t want to be a one-year wonder. They want to become a consistent player for the conference crown. That may be difficult to do in the spring. The Hoosiers have some huge holes to fill on the mound without ace pitcher Eric Arnett, Matt Bashore and Joey O’Gara. They also have some holes to fill at the plate with the departures of All-American catcher Josh Phegley, Evan Crawford and Kipp Schutz. The silver lining could be that the Hoosiers welcome back hitters such as Brian Lambert, Alex Dickerson, Jerrud Sabourin and Tyler Rogers. IU has some important arms to replace this fall.

  1. I think we will lose a huge power threat in Phegley, a very consistent player in Schutz, and a great baserunner in Crawford, but I think we will be better on the left side of the infield this season.

  2. Dunning - .308 overall, .214 in conference
    Gonzalez - .303 overall, .257 in conference

I can see us getting a little more offense out of the left side this year to.

  3. You maybe right George, but who is going to hit .392 in left field and .344 and 17 homers at catcher?

  4. If Lyon can catch, he can hit for serious power. Maybe not 17 homers, but definitely double-digit potential. I suspect Dickerson will play left, so it's more a question of who winds up at DH. But I hear ya.

  5. 11 hits last year for Lyon and 6 were doubles. Also, 4 homers with wooden bat this summer. If he gets the spot, I can see how he could put up some power numbers. I think Earley will play more this year too at 3B, C, or DH and he has some power too. He is also surprisingly very fast. For left I'm really crossing my fingers on Micah Johnson that he can field an outfield spot and surprsie some people. Plus, Leiendecker had a rediculous summer. Offensively, I think we do lose in LF and C but I think we can improve at 3B, SS, and RF and still be solid at LF and C.
