Aaron Fitt of BA: "Big Ten will be a three-bid league"

Aaron Fitt of Baseball America recently wrote: "I think the Big Ten will be a three-bid league again this year with OSU, Minnesota and Michigan."

Do you agree with his assessment of the conference? As last year's Big Ten tournament champions, what do you think the Hoosiers chances are of getting back to the NCAA tournament? Will we have to win the tournament, or do you think we could have a good enough record for a bid regardless of the tournament outcome? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

  1. I cant see iu getting enough wins to get in the tournament w/o winning the tournament. Cant see being any better than last yr.

  2. It'll be tough for Michigan to get in. Being the one who blogs about them, I don't think they have the solidified rotation or keys set up defensively. Third base is still a question until Lorenz can prove himself. We start a freshman (albeit one drafted in the ~6th round) starting at shortstop.

The bullpen should be solid, but there are a lot of questions on the defense and hitting.

I may be a pessimist, but when people were predicting the same thing last year, I had the same feeling.

  4. IU will have to win the Big Ten Tourney to get a NCAA regional bid.Playing Taylor, St. Francis[non D1 opponents]and Morehead plus a weak spring trip schedule will not help their cause in the eyes of the selection committee.Need to qualify and win the tournament to go to the NCAA'S.

  5. Anonymous^ I agree but this isnt like basketball. over 30 wins no matter what gives you a shot at the tourney, in baseball, and in the big ten. But very true, if we win over 30 we beat the non conference and are beating the big ten, which puts us in.

  6. I have to disagree with the 30 wins puts IU close to getting in. If IU doesnt win the tourney they could possibly get in with 40 wins - might get a look with 35 wins - but 30 wont be enough

  7. The Hooisers do have 14 games scheduled against teams that were in the NCAA Regionals last year

  8. This years Hooisers will not be more talented individually than last years squad - but they might be a more cohesive unit. I'll go out on a limb and say the Hoosiers don't get off to as bad a start as they did last year - and they win 33 games prior to the start of the Big Ten Tourney.

  9. Scott,
Man, I love your optimism!! I know some of the boys--I guess we can call them young men now-- really like what they see and the way the team is starting to come together.

As for all of us fans? We just need to believe and remember: it's baseball...anything can happen!!

    GO HOOSIERS!!!

  10. I predict we win more games than last year. We just need a couple of freshman pitchers to step up to fill some big innings.
