Errors, Errors, Errors

So, how do you outhit a team 7 to 14 and still lose? Errors! We have been plagued by them all year long. Whether it is defensive miscues, poor base running, untimely hitting, we have had too many errors. Today we had 3 fielding errors which brings the total to 29 in 12 games! For those that don't want to do the math in your head, that's 2.4 errors a game. Not only is that alone a huge number, errors do not always fully show in the box score. Would Bashore have walked 2 and hit 3 Kentucky batters if he had more confidence in his fielders? I can't answer that question, but I know I might be pressured to do more as a pitcher to overcompensate. Would we have struck out 8 times compared to only 1 walk? I can't answer that either, but perhaps we were too anxious at the plate to overcompensate. We have talented players, but if the old adage 'defense wins championships' holds true, we must get this problem under control as soon as possible.

Regardless of the outcome, I want to give it up to Matt Carr who had a breakout performance in 2.2 innings of relief only giving up 1 hit and striking out 6. With him now and Squires last game pitching really well, I have hopes of winning more midweek games as the year progresses.

Next game: 3/14 at 9am vs. Bowling Green State University (2-8); Projected starter: Eric Arnett
