Hoosiers Complete Sweep of Northwestern

The Indiana University baseball Hoosiers completed a much-needed weekend sweep of the Northwestern Wildcats with a 11-2 victory this afternoon. After struggling at the plate in games 1 and 2, IU's bats come to life in the series finale. The Hoosiers pounded out 14 hits and drew 4 walks in putting up more runs in game 3 than they did in games 1 and 2 combined. With a grand slam in the 5th inning to go along with an RBI single in the 7th, second baseman Tyler Rogers led the way for the Hoosiers this afternoon. Left-fielder Kipp Schutz also contributed in a big way with 3 hits, 3 runs scored and a RBI. Jerrud Sabourin and Evan Crawford added a pair of hits in the winning effort, and Jake Dunning drove in two on the afternoon.

Freshman Blake Monar got the start on the mound for IU and pitched 4 strong innings before walks get the best of him in the 5th. For the game, the left-hander only gave up 2 hits and 2 runs while striking out 4, but he walked 3 in the 5th, including a bases-loaded walk that allowed Northwestern to score their second run of the game. Fortunately for Monar and the Hoosiers, Joey O'Gara came on to induce an inning-ending double play in route to throwing 2.2 innings of perfect relief (0 runs, 0 hits, 0 walks). Wyatt Hoff and Matt Igel each pitched an inning of scoreless relief as well.

This was a solid weekend for the Hoosiers all the way around. The team took care of business and got the sweep that they needed. Now they just need to do the same next weekend against Michigan State to set the stage for a big run in the Big Ten Tournament. Go Hoosiers!

  2. I gotta think OSU and Minn will hold on to their top spots this weekend with both sweeping.

  3. Play each game like it's the most important game of your life - otherwise - quit!

I think OSU and Minn will both stumble!

  4. I hope you're right Scott! I would like to see the Illini to stumble as well but we really just need to pass 2 of the 3! The most important thing for IU - win all 3 next week because that's all we can control.
