IU Advances to Big Ten Championship Game with 13-3 Win Over OSU

Blake Monar turned in a solid pitching performance (the third straight for the Hoosiers), and the IU bats continued to pound out the hits as IU beat the #1 seeded Buckeyes 13-3. The win puts the Hoosiers in the Big Ten Championship game with an NCAA tournament bid on the line.

Since the Big Ten Network doesn't have a video of the press conference, here is the transcript of IU Coach Tracy Smith after the game:

On the win over Ohio State:
“As I said yesterday, it is so important to stay in the winner’s bracket. We knew Ohio State, with the crowd, was going to be a tough contest. But the pivotal play was the bases load, nobody out that we were able to get out of (in the fifth inning) and then we were able to score some runs.”

On his team’s chances to win the tournament:
“We are taking nothing for granted. I am glad our guys are confident and on a big roll, but it can all change in a hurry.”

On the performance of starter Blake Monar:
“One thing Blake did was he battled and he competed. That was not his best performance, but he battled and competed and he gave us a chance to win. We got what we needed out of him today.”

On the status of Eric Arnett:
“We will probably not start him, and a lot depends on the situation of the game. He has a bright future in this game and we want to be smart about it. But, rest assured, if the right situation presents itself you will see Arnett tomorrow.”

Next Up for the Hoosiers:
Ohio State/Minnesota - Saturday 7:05 p.m. ET

  1. Wow....I didn't know Alex D was now wearing #1 and switch hitting. I'd say the Big 10 Network doesn't actually know who these two are yet. Both had a great game, but that was definately Tyler Rogers with the bases clearing triple!!

Hey...IU is going to win this tomorrow, and then they're going to the NCAAs!!!

    GO HOOSIERS!!!

  2. NewHoosierFan, I hope you're right. Would love to see the Hoosiers wrap it up Saturday night.

The one great thing about NOT having that bye game - is possibly being able to bring back a stud or two if necessary! Go Hoosiers

  3. I like Carr, O'Gara, Squires, and Igel in the 4th game. I think Carr and O'Gara are more capable of going deeper in the game so I would start one of them. Squires has been awesome out of the pen so I like him for 1-3 innings hopefully to close it out. I like Igel in short relief too where he doesn't have to face the same batter twice. I hope its not necessary to bring back a stud, but I like Arnett to pitch an inning or get us out of a jam if needed.
