Off Season Update (Injuries and Transfers)

We've had a lot of comments and questions on the blog in regard to the status of several Hoosiers from this past year's squad. So, I decided to email Coach Tracy Smith, and the updates he provided are summarized below.

Matt Carr
Carr (who likely would have stepped in as a weekend starter this year as he had the third most innings pitched of all returning pitchers, the third best returning ERA, and the second best batting average against) had Tommy John surgery this summer and is likely out for entire year. He suffered the injury in the NCAA tournament.

Vince Gonzalez
After ultimately earning his way to a starting role as the Hoosiers third baseman last season, Gonzalez proved sure-handed at the hot corner in only committing 5 errors on the season while posting a .303 BA along the way. Unfortunately, as many of you already surmised, Gonzalez will be transferring to a JC.

Cody Webber
After generating some Hoosier excitement early in the year, the injury bug hit Webber hard last season. He is having his 3rd labrum surgery and will be transferring to a JC as well. I speak for all Hoosier fans as I say we wish Webber a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the diamond at a JC soon.

Marshall Gorham
Lefthander Marshall Gorham will also be transferring to JC after posting a 10.12 ERA in his freshman season with the Hoosiers.

Ben Riggins
Bloomington native and redshirt freshman Ben Riggins has decided to “hang it up." Riggins did not appear in any games for the Hoosiers last season.

So, that's the word on the injury/transfer front. Thanks for all the comments and questions. Keep checking back at Behind the Plate for up-to-date news on all things Hoosier baseball this fall. Go Hoosiers!

  1. Big losses in the infield with Gonzalez and Webber gone! Plus, I thought Matt Carr was a shoe-in for a weekend starter spot. Definitely going to need some freshman to step up in a big way.

  2. I hate to see Gonzalez gone, but with the incoming freshman infielders, he would have been pushed for playing time anyways. The big thing is whether we can replace Carr with any of the sophomores or freshman. Can't wait to see some of the new guys in the fall!
