Wyatt Hoff No Longer on IU Roster

Although this may be old news to some of you, Wyatt Hoff is no longer listed on IU's roster. Hoff logged the 6th most innings of any returner (behind Monar, Squires, Carr, Leininger, and Igel) last year sporting a 13.73 ERA and a .424 BA against.

While those numbers are not very good and it appears as not much of a loss, this does leave IU with only 12 pitchers on the roster (7 of which are Freshman). In alphabetical order, the IU pitchers include: Matt Carr, Tyler Feine, Greg Heban, Alex Herz, Jonny Hoffman, Matt Igel, Drew Leininger, Mike McKinley, Blake Monar, Derek Roof, Chris Squires, and Walker Stadler.

With only 5 returners (including Carr who is recovering from Tommy John surgery) and 7 new faces, how do you all see the pitching situation playing out? Will Monar be a good #1 starter? Can Squires move from a closing role to fill a weekend starter spot? Will Igel be the Igel will saw in the Big Ten Tournament last year and command a weekend starter spot as well? Will any of the freshman log a lot of innings? Assuming Squires is a starter, who will fill the closer spot? Do you want to see Leiendecker on the mound? Feel free to post your thoughts or any additional questions in the comments section with regard to the pitching situation.

Also, if anyone took any pictures of the new IU players who are not pictured on this blog at last weekend's fall games, I would love it you would send them to me at iubaseballfan@live.com, and I will put them up as soon as possible.

  1. I think we can have a good chance of winning 2 of 3 every weekend with a rotation of Monar, Squires, and Igel. But we can't make them go 9 innings every game. Carr wont have an impact until late in the season if at all bc of his injury, so that leaves Leininger and the frosh to step up. I wasn't that impressed this past weekend of any of the freshman but they are going to get innings and have more chances to win over the fans. I would also like to see Leiendecker back on the mound.

  3. why is hoff off the roster? this team is a lot different that last year's team, there will most likely be struggles this year. with all of the talent on last years team, they definitely under achieved. i think they could have gone further than they did, but still was great team. this year will be a rebuilding year with so many players lost. though there is a good bunch of recruits, they are still freshman.

  4. I thought Hoffman looked pretty good until he hit the fifth inning on Sunday, but then it came to a crashing halt. Also liked what I saw of Walker Stadler...not sure if he's a weekend guy or not, but definitely serviceable out of the pen.

  5. Wyatt Hoff has some medical issues which have put his career on hold indefinately at this time. We wish him the best and hope he can someday hurl the rock again!

  6. tyler feine is no longer with the team neither i have heard. thats one less pitcher. i would like to see leiendecker get innings. when i have seen him on his game, he can be one of the big tens best. with him monar and squires/hoffman/igle, we could have some good guys to run out there to start a ball game in my opinion. if the other guys and freshman can come in and contribute, and it starts from learning from there upperclassmen, i am not worried about this pitching staff as it has a good defense behind them and some sticks in the lineup as well. it will be interesting to see what coach smith can do with this younger ballclub.

  7. WOW! We just keep losing more pitchers. If Feine is gone that leaves us with 10 pitchers w Carr out and we will have 5 games a week some weeks.

Has Leiendecker pitched yet in these fall games or has he just played OF?

  8. Leiendecker has just played OF. Also heard the coaches had him throw a easy bullpen where he topped out at 88mph. It seems like they would give him a chance again come January!

  9. It'll be stupid is coach smith doesn't give Leiendecker a chance. IU needs pitching.

  10. Leiendecker is the best athlete with the best arm on the team!

  11. Smith will surely give him a chance. It is just whether or not he will make the most of it. No one is questioning his arm strenght. It is his control that is the problem. Best arm doesn't mean best pitcher. And, best athlete doesn't mean best at tracking fly balls in the field or hitting a baseball.

  12. Ask Leiendecker's Summer team coach how good he is , that's where he was last given a solid opportunity to play! (Chance) Four innings last season for I.U.??????

  13. I dunno. He didn't capitalize on the chances that I saw. Nine walks and two HBP in four innings?

  14. Leiendecker only pitched 1 inning or so this summer didn't he?

  15. Dunno saw all that? About the same results as some of our other pitchers first four innings last year! It may take a little more encouragement and coaching for some players to get going!

  16. Sounds like the Hoosiers should withdraw from the Big Ten and enter Little League so the kiddies can get a little more encouragement and coaching to get some of the players going. Am I missing something here? My son grew up in a household where you take responsibility for your performance. If you are good, you're good. If you are bad, you're bad. You don't blame somebody else for your failures. If what I read above is accurate about Leindecker getting four innings last year, his stat line very easily could have read 4 innings, 1 or 2 walks, 5-6 k's and no HBP's. I bet if that were the case, Leindecker would be pitching. Just a hunch.

  17. Fewest innings for any other pitcher with nine walks or more: Wyatt Hoff at 19 2/3. The other pitchers who didn't throw regularly COMBINED for five walks. Throw strikes.

  18. Hoff is no longer on the team...maybe the coaches are onto something?
